This is our story of installing a small residential solar system with a large electric grid supplier in a municipality of few such installations. At the beginning we knew nothing, yet we had a long strong history of working with restoration and building contractors, but this was a new rodeo! We realized the challenges of getting unbiased information about a solar installation; its reliable components; its financial aspects (beginning to end); product and installers’ warranties; and dealing with municipality codes, electric grid net metering procedures, tax credit, and SRECs. While there are a number of internet sites claiming to help, many are either installers with their own particular services, financial come-ons, and system products, or “ANGI” type sites who have collected such installers. There are YouTube presentations, but again there might be agendas by presenters, rather than unbiased info. We found UnderstandSolar.com and SolarUnitedNeighbors.org to be comprehensive and helpful. We researched and gathered information, then we developed installer interview standards and questions, as well as objectives and particulars wanted within our contract with any installer. Now we reach out to installers. While we would have preferred to support local installers, the email/text responses cascade in from both ‘national’ installers and from ‘ANGI’ sites. Ironically, even though our some of our local installers are members of ‘ANGI’ site, none of them are passed to us. The nearest installer offered was 200 miles away…ah service from a distance “when we get enough clients in your area, we’ll contact you”. SOLUTION: Reach out to our Real Estate and banking folks…ah, let’s get local! We were recommended to BRIGHTEYE SOLAR, LLC… “We went with Josh cuz we knew the family and he did our first business system, but BRIGHTEYE SOLAR offered a better price, warranty, and service, you should check them out.” After interviewing five other local installers (within 30 miles), each addressing, as best they could or wanted to, our interview standards and contract wishes, BRIGHTEYE SOLAR’s Dan showed not only his personal and professional attention to us, but also confirmed that BRIGHTEYE SOLAR does the same. Our initial meetings with Dan were followed up with email and phone question/answer sessions. At contract signing time we met with the company’s owner Jim to create and agree with a mutually constructed comprehensive contract and system proposal (location, components, warranties, time-lines, follow-ups, etc.). Within two weeks a knowledgeable crew of Adam (electro-tech), R.J. and Sam carefully explained and completed the 17 PV panel installation in two days. They kept the work site clean, orderly and made adjustments based on our on-site preferences, which did not violate the site plans provided to us by BRIGHTEYE SOLAR’s client contact Yvette. Yvette expertly resolved all the inspections, net metering contracts, and SREC contracts with continued email/phone contact with us. Project manager Austin confirmed the system’s effectiveness on day 2 of installation; was present for municipal site inspections (passed); and effectively established the system internet monitoring, and its net metering with the SREC service. So, the story’s continues…we did the necessary homework; determined what we wanted in a system and who we wanted to work with based on shared criteria; went through the people processes to find a firm, which was personable, professional, accommodating, comprehensive its service and communication; and followed through with integrity to our system’s completion. Don’t believe us…go with BRIGHTEYE SOLAR. Ask them for our contact so you can verify our solar success story… we await your contact!
