There can be solar tax credits and incentives available at the federal, state and local levels. The calculator above will show you the value of all incentives your home is eligible for.
New Hampshire got its solar policy on the right track right pretty early. The General Court passed a strong Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) back in 2007. With it came a good statewide rebate program to lower the up-front price of solar. It's now almost a decade and a half later, and the state still has strong rebates and high electricity prices, which are the major reasons solar is a great investment here.
Several times over the last two years, lawmakers passed bills to expand New Hampshire’s net metering rules, which help homeowners further by allowing them to harvest more credit for their solar power they produce but aren’t able to use onsite.
However, governor Chris Sununu has vetoed all of them so far. The RPS here could be strengthened as well. Unless something changes, things will start looking a little dimmer for homeowners looking to install solar here soon. Regardless, for 2021, the state rebate program is strong and there are decent low income solar programs to boot. New Hampshire continues to be a strong place to go solar.

Find out how much these incentives and/or New Hampshire solar tax credits will reduce your cost to go solar and add batteries
The federal solar investment tax credit will have the biggest impact on the cost you will face to go solar in New Hampshire
If you install your photovoltaic system before the end of 2032, the federal tax credit is 30% of the cost of your solar panel system. This is 30% off the entire cost of the system including equipment, labor, and permitting.
Example: If your solar energy system costs $20,000, your federal solar tax credit would be $20,000 x 30% = $6,000.
The federal tax credit falls to 26% starting in 2033.
With net metering in some states, you get full retail rate credit for the amount of electricity you send back into the grid with your solar panels.
Net Metering requires your utility to monitor how much energy your solar power system produces and how much energy you actually consume, and make sure you get credit for the surplus.
The New Hampshire public utilities commission (PUC) made rules that require all utilities to offer net metering to residential customers. Surplus energy is applied as a credit to your next month’s bill at full retail electric rates, and credits can be carried over indefinitely. In addition, if you’re on a default service plan you can get annual payments for net metering surplus, if the surplus exceeds 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh).
That’s a very strong rule, but there might be changes coming soon. H.B. 1116, enacted in May 2016, raises New Hampshire's net metering aggregate capacity limit from 50 MW to 100 MW. The bill also directs the Public Utilities Commission to initiate a proceeding to develop new alternative net metering tariffs. That could spell trouble, as other formerly solar-friendly states have not proven good at coming up with replacement for net metering.
We recommend going solar as soon as possible to lock in your net metering rates.
The New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission (“PUC”) runs a statewide solar power rebate program that offers $200 per kilowatt (kW), up to $1,000 or 30% of project costs, whichever is less. All residential systems are eligible for the rebate, but because the maximum incentive is $1,000, that means a de facto cap of 5-kW for the rebate.
Keep in mind, this incentive has to be applied for and approved before you begin construction, so get your ducks in a row by working with a trusted installer. Use our solar calculator on this page to get started working with one.
When you install a solar power system, your home appreciates by twenty times your annual electricity savings. Luckily, New Hampshire allows cities and towns to exempt that increase in home value from all associated property taxes.
More than 80 cities and towns in New Hampshire have adopted a property tax exemption for one or more of these energy sources. Here's a full list of the cities and towns that have adopted a property tax exemption for solar power. Don’t fret the details; expert solar installers we partner with will walk you through all the details.

I had a good feeling about this company from the very first contact. They were very open and honest about expectations and took the time to explain everything and answer my long list of questions and concerns. As an employee-owned company and a certified B Corp (look it up), I felt I was dealing with local people from my surrounding communities, and not some distant money driven corporation with pushy sales. After the initial visit, I received a full proposal within a day or two and was given the time to process, get additional quotes and do more research, without being hassled for a decision. In the end, the decision was between two proposals and despite ReVision being marginally more expensive and having a longer lead time for installation, I knew they were the right guys for my project. In addition, they had my panel of choice (REC) that the other vendor wasn't able to supply. I was also very fortunate that the initial lead-time was cut by several months meaning that I would be up and running for the peak summer months. The installation crew were a great bunch of guys and were on site for a total of three days. I talked to them often and was given regular updates and when they wrapped up, they told me what I could expect next. The only minor hiccup we had was that I was told that the paperwork for the change to a net meter (by the utility) would be submitted by the next day (after installation) and that the utility would have 10 working days to switch the meter. It actually took a whole week before the utility received the application and I did not receive a response from ReVision when I requested clarification on the submission. Perhaps some miscommunication? Luckily, the following week, I contacted the utility directly, who expedited the meter switchover and PTO, and everything was up and running within the 10 day period. The be fair, had ReVision not set the bar so high from the beginning, I would have normally expected such minor delays in the process from any vendor. All in all, I have been very happy with the whole process and outcome. Watching that meter "spin" backwards so much more than it does forwards gives a warm fuzzy feeling, and let's me know that I'm saving up credit for the winter. My calculations from the first few weeks of operation (sunny and cloudy days) helped validate the system sizing and the meeting of our goal to eliminate our bill completely. I'm confident that we'll even make a little revenue over the year as a whole. Definitely the right choice!

We've have owned our system for almost 8 years and had a Enphase microinverter fail. Enphase sent me a replacement microinverter and the search began to find someone to do the work as the original installers are now in PA. After multiple contacts, I found New England Clean Energy who quickly responded and I have to say, they are terrific! Definitely recommend them if you are a Massachusetts solar system owner or one looking for a new installation. Great communications with a great service team!! The team that came to do the replacement we're extremely friendly, knowledgeable and highly professional. I will definitely call on these folks for any future needs! 5 Star service from start to finish!!

From the start of my time working with 603 Solar, Zach and the team were extremely knowledgeable, transparent, and prompt! Zach answered all of my questions that I first had during our initial phone conversation in June. At the time, the Federal credit was going to be reduced from 26% to 22%. Understanding that greater than 6 months was an unreasonable leadtime, Zach assured me that if my project was not completed before 12/31/2022, 603 Solar would have given me the additional 4% credit I would have lost. We also ran into a few slight hiccups with my town building inspector, but Zach kept me in the loop every step of the way and was able to come to a resolution to keep our project moving forward. I would highly recommend Zach and 603 Solar for your project!

Peter and Vlad have been great to deal with. They are both very knowledgeable and true professionals in their field. We had recently purchase a home with an existing system and they helped us in making sure the system was working correctly and spent a lot of time going over and making sure that I understood how everything worked. It's refreshing to see that they have a true passion and would highly recommend them for any of your solar needs.
