Federal ITC 30% (tax credit)
State tax credit: Yes ($1,600)
Net metering (by utility)
There can be solar tax credits and incentives available at the federal, state and local levels. The calculator above will show you the value of all incentives your home is eligible for.
Utah is a truly sunny place, making it a naturally strong place to install home solar panels. However, there are a few issues on the legislative side we’d like to see improved to make the economics work even better.
The state has a voluntary Renewable Portfolio Standard, meaning utility companies here are not required to derive their energy from clean sources, like the solar panels on your rooftop. That means they don’t have much incentive to create solar incentives for you.
So, while there is a state solar tax credit in Utah, there are no solar energy rebates or solar sales tax exemptions here. Lawmakers also just allowed Rocky Mountain Power to kill net metering (more on why that's important below).
If it weren't for all the abundant sunshine, Utah may not be such a great place to install home solar. As it is though, home solar power makes a lot of sense here regardless. Use the solar calculator above to compute your savings!

Find out how much these incentives and/or Utah solar tax credits will reduce your cost to go solar and add batteries
The federal solar investment tax credit will have the biggest impact on the cost you will face to go solar in Utah
If you install your photovoltaic system before the end of 2032, the federal tax credit is 30% of the cost of your solar panel system. This is 30% off the entire cost of the system including equipment, labor, and permitting.
Example: If your solar energy system costs $20,000, your federal solar tax credit would be $20,000 x 30% = $6,000.
The federal tax credit falls to 26% starting in 2033.
With net metering in some states, you get full retail rate credit for the amount of electricity you send back into the grid with your solar panels.
With net metering, you can sell the excess solar energy you produce with your solar panels back to the utility, a huge win for you as a solar homeowner. Unfortunately, Utah no longer requires its utility companies to offer net metering.
Instead, RMP now offers what they call "net billing," which they define using schedule 137. Under the net billing arrangement, solar owners can generate and use electricity from solar panels to reduce the amount of energy they buy from the utility. When the sun is shining bright and solar panels are generating more than a home can use, the excess energy is sent to the grid, and RMP pays a price of 5.969¢ per kWh (5.639¢ from October - May). Those payments are applied to the homeowner's account as a bill credit, and used to reduce their final monthly bill for energy they buy when the solar panels aren't producing.
Other net metering programs in Utah vary depending on specific utility or co-op rules.
While Utah does not have a dedicated state rebate for solar panel installation, some manufacturers like LG offer their own solar rebates. These programs are usually time sensitive. For example, LG offers a $600 solar rebate on their equipment, which your installer can help you redeem over the next year.
Everyone in Utah is eligible to take a personal tax credit when installing solar panels. The tax credit for a residential system is 25% of the purchase and installation costs up to a maximum of $1,600. Dolla dolla bill y’all.
And of course, Utahns also benefit from the Federal Solar Tax Credit. There's no cap on the federal tax credit and you'll deduct that after you subtract your rebate. For sample calculations, use our Utah solar calculator on this page.

I cannot stress this enough. If you are the type of person who wants to work with a totally open and honest business that believes in the work they are doing, then you should talk to Mynt Solar about any solar or home efficiency work you want done. They are a local company building a reputation on honesty and good work. I was impressed with the reputation they had online, so I decided to get a bid for our solar project from them. Not only did they come in significantly lower than the other well regarded company I looked into, but they also were perfectly happy to do the extra electrical work I wanted, as well as to help me design it. I also wanted to look into attic fans, and that was also something they specialized in. I was impressed with everyone from sales to electricians, to the owner of the company who I met on the second day of installation. When I asked about additional work like insulation, they were completely honest about what work was likely to pay for itself in efficiency and that which would not. When it was discovered that a misunderstanding would result in significantly more work for them, they simply asked for more time and completed everything without ever increasing the cost of the project. During the whole process, they kept a solid line of communication open, provided me with updates and worked extremely hard to schedule the work as quickly as possible despite there being no rush on my part. I noticed that there was an emphasis on not just getting it done according to code, but doing it 'right' so that there wouldn't be any problems in the future. When the work was done, everything was just as promised. The worksite was clean, and everything was put back in place. I honestly cannot remember the last time I was this impressed with anyone working on my house. Our next solar or home efficiency project will be going directly to Mynt Solar.

We had our panels installed in February of 2022. Our inverter has been out for months now and our sells rep. Chris kept insuring us that someone would be out to fix the problem. Now they never return our calls or answer our calls. No one at the company will give me a name or number of someone else to talk to and state we have to go through Chris. We now not only have a high electrical bill, but a bill for Solar panels that are useless. If you are thinking about getting solar panels, I would do a lot of research prior to deciding on this company and even if solar panels are worth it in the end.

Don’t be fooled by Intermountain Wind and Solar. They have good salesman but when it comes to installation and actually working with the company, they are the worst. We ha e to beg for an install date and then had to call and remind them we were there every step of the way. Please do yourself a favor and go with another company.

Solaroo installed my system a few years ago, and now I have a leak in my roof. Solarfox will not honor Solaroo warranty, so not sure why they are saying (Formerly Solaroo Energy) in the business title. Very misleading. Either honor their warranty and fix my leak, or don't claim them.

It hs been years since we had solar installed by CE. Great product. good results. After all these years we changed internet service and needed some help getting our system reporting. We have not had reporting since October of 2023. Our calls to Creative Energies ended with a need to replace two 'Emphase' modules at a price of over $1300. There was no attempt to be willing to help, without getting a service fee. This is a simple reset since this all occurred after switching to Xfinity. After years of recommending them...I can no longer do so. All the installation and product kudoes asside...service is still the reason we should support a company. They simply said...sorry...you are out of warranty. There is a 10 year warranty...... so why no service!

I worked with Dave Herr on the installation of my solar panels and he was responsive and clear with quotes. He took care of the required permits efficiently and the actual install went smoothly and in a timely fashion. All time estimates were very accurate and I couldn't be happier with the result. I highly recommend Dwelltek.

I purchased a solar system from USG in April 2020. When I try to contact USG for after sales service, their website is gone and emails to utahsolargroup.com are bouncing. I suspect they are no longer in business. Does anyone know for certain?

Power CO is very easy to work with. They were professional and communicated with me throughout the entire process. Their price was the lowest by far of any of the other 3 bids, even though they use the better optimizers, and there were no unexpected charges on the final bill. My system works exactly as it was designed and my electricity bills have been reduced dramatically. I will use them again when I purchase a new home next year.
